Press Brake Tooling Applications
Technical FAQ
The GUNNARPRESS press brake tooling manufacturing process involves approximately 12 different steps, including milling, hardening, grinding and comprehensive quality control procedures that are applied from raw material selection to final processing. Our strict manufacturing standards are integral to ensuring the production of high quality press brake toolings, providing quality assurance to our customers.
Heat treatment in press brake tooling improves internal structure, increases toughness, and enhances wear resistance. Proper treatment prevents cracking, deformation, and early failure during production.
Induction hardened press brake tooling refers to tools with a hardened working surface (HRC 54–60) achieved by heating to 850–950°C. This process significantly improves wear resistance and service life.
CNC machined press brake tooling offers:
High repeatability
Precise angles and radii
Consistent batch quality
This improves bending efficiency and reduces production errors.
The lifespan of industrial press brake tooling depends on material and heat treatment. High-quality 42CrMo tooling with proper hardening offers long service life even under high load and repeated bending.
Yes, custom press brake tooling can be designed based on your drawings, material thickness, and bending requirements. It improves efficiency and solves complex forming challenges.
Export packaging for press brake tooling includes anti-rust oil, protective wrapping, and reinforced wooden crates to prevent damage during long-distance transportation.
A reliable press brake tooling manufacturer should offer:
- High-quality material (42CrMo)
- Advanced heat treatment
- Precision grinding (±0.02 mm)
- Engineering support
- Consistent quality control
“Our engineers can help you select the most suitable tooling based on your specific application.”
The best material for heavy-duty press brake tooling is 42CrMo / 42CrMo4 alloy steel. It provides high strength, excellent toughness, and strong wear resistance, making it ideal for high tonnage and repeated bending applications.
For press brake punches and dies, the recommended hardness is:
Body: HRC 30–35 (impact resistance)
Working surface: HRC 54–60 (wear resistance)
This ensures longer tooling life and stable bending accuracy.
High-quality CNC press brake tooling should achieve precision within ±0.02 mm. This ensures consistent bending angles, reduced setup time, and better finished part quality.
Segmented press brake tooling is used for flexible bending, especially for box bending and complex parts. It allows quick setup changes and covers a wide range of bending lengths.
Professional press brake tooling manufacturers ensure quality through:
Dimensional inspection
Hardness testing
Angle verification
Inspection reports
This guarantees consistent and reliable performance.
Laser marked press brake tooling typically includes tool ID, angle, radius, length, and tonnage, allowing quick identification and reducing setup errors.
For most press brake tooling suppliers:
Standard tooling: 3–5 days
Custom tooling: 20–25 days
Lead time depends on tooling complexity and quantity.

TIPS
AMADA SYSTEM
The Amada/Promecam clamping system tool is the most common in the world and is used on most press brakes. It offers a wide selection of punches and dies to handle virtually any bending process, as well as specialized tools for specific applications. If necessary, we can manufacture and supply modified tools if the standard ones are not suitable.
We offer high quality tools made from 42CrMo structural steel. All punches and dies undergo volumetric induction heat treatment, which gives the working surfaces a hardness of 47+/-2HRc. At the customer’s request, we can perform laser hardening to increase the hardness of the main working surfaces to 56-60HRc.
All fastening, joining and working surfaces of the tool undergo precision grinding. The parallelism and straightness of the working and fastening surfaces correspond to a tolerance of 0.02mm/1000mm. At customer’s request, we can achieve higher accuracy of 0.01mm/1000mm.
TRUMPF/WILA SYSTEM
One of the advantages of the TRUMPF/WILA system is the ability to rotate the punches on the press machine without additional devices or manipulations, thanks to the symmetrical design of the shank.
Punches weighing up to 12.5 kg typically feature Safetyclick push-button releases, which allow for easy and convenient installation and removal of punches vertically anywhere on the beam. Punches weighing more than 12.5 kg have Safety pins and can only be inserted and removed from the side.
The tool is made of high quality structural steel 42CrMo4.The volumetric induction heat treatment method is used for all punches and dies. After heat treatment, the working surfaces reach a hardness of 47+/-2 HRc. At the customer’s request, the main working surfaces of the tool can be laser hardened to a hardness of 56-60 HRc.
All fastening, connecting and working surfaces of the tool undergo precision grinding. The parallelism and straightness tolerance is 0.02 mm/1000 mm on all working and mounting surfaces. At the request of the customer, this parameter can be improved to 0.01 mm/1000 mm.
LVD SYSTEM
We offer the supply of press brake tools with LVD mounting upon your request. You can submit a request indicating the markings and the necessary segmentation according to the original manufacturer’s catalog.
The tool is made of high-quality structural steel 42CrMo4.
The volumetric induction heat treatment method is used for all punches and dies, after heat treatment the working surfaces have a hardness of 47+/-2HRc. At the customer’s request, it is possible to increase the hardness of the main working surfaces of the tool by laser hardening to 56-60HRc.

BYSTRONIC SYSTEM
Press brake tools of the Beyeler/Safan system for machines of the same manufacturers, as well as other manufacturers with this fastening system. This fastening system can be considered the third most common in the world. In Russia, this system is not so popular, but we are ready to provide the necessary support to customers with this type of machine and supply press brake tools to solve your production problems.
